Care consultations are usually helpful to individuals who have been diagnosed with a chronic or life-threatening illness, adult children and grandchildren who are caring for elders in the family, and spouses who provide support to their ill/disabled partners.

During this process, a thorough biopshychosocial assessment is conducted to determine areas in need of additional support. In subsequent care consultation meetings, I provide knowledge and expertise about resources for care and services depending on the situation and personal preferences.

Care consultations typically focus on the following:

  • Determining current specific care needs and planning for what is likely to arise
  • Identifying available community resources
  • Navigating different levels of care in the healthcare system
  • Discussing advocacy tools
  • Educating on behaviors that may arise in someone with a brain disorder, and how best to communicate as abilities change
  • Engaging in long-term planning
  • Mediating family differences around caring for an elderly person
  • Exploring ways for the care-receiver to become comfortable with new needs and changes in autonomy
  • Supporting caregivers by identifying stages, strategies, and options for respite

“It’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”  ~ Edward J. Stieglitz
